A New BARNEY Movie Is In The Works

Strap in, motherfuckers.

In what can only be described as "the last goddamn thing I expected to be writing up today", a new Barney movie is on the way via Mattel, Get Out's Daniel Kaluuya, and Kaluuya's recently-formed 59% production company. You're thinking, "Like, Barney Barney?" Yes, that Barney. The big-ass purple dinosaur. Starred in a wildly successful kids' TV show back in the '90s. Sings songs. You know the one.

Says Kaluuya:

"Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We're excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of 'I love you, you love me' can stand the test of time."

And Mattel says:

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

If you feel like your brain is melting while reading this, you are not alone: a new Barney movie, produced by Daniel Kaluuya, and the apparent aim is to somehow make it subvert expectations? The mind reels at the possibilities (this "subversion" angle likely means it'll simply be a bit more knowing than the Barney of our youth, but it is good fun to imagine a Barney movie where our hero is now, say, a hardcore gambling addict, or a serial arsonist).

As of this writing, no studio is attached to the project, but we're guessing the nostalgia factor alone will have someone snapping this baby up in record time. Stay tuned for more on the new Barney as further updates become available, and be safe out there.
