Yes, there was already a remake of The Grudge. Yes, we would probably be better served by new stories rather than an endless parade of remakes. Yes, this trailer for Nicolas Pesce's take on the material (which hits theaters early next year) is treading on highly familiar ground.
And yet...
...that looks pretty good, right?
Familiar, yes, but apparently well-made, and featuring a cast worth getting excited about (Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver). Let us also take into account Nicolas Pesce's previous films, The Eyes of My Mother and Piercing, both of which marked him as a talent worth keeping an eye on.
Do we need another remake of The Grudge? Highly debatable. Will we watch this particular remake of The Grudge? Oh, most definitely. I mean, why not? As long as they haven't spoiled all the good scares in this trailer (or in any future trailers they might release), could be a perfectly-timed bit of early-January counterprogramming.
