Henry Cavill Has “Not Given Up” Superman
If you were wondering why Zack Snyder and several cast members of Justice League were being especially annoying about the fabled Snyder Cut last weekend, that's because we've reached the two year anniversary of that film. That's right. It's been two years since we last saw Henry Cavill wearing red and blue tights and a digitally-altered upper lip. How time flies.
With everything that's happened since Justice League came and underperfomed (the seeming dissolution of the DC Extended Universe, Henry Cavill becoming the star of The Witcher, Tyler Hoechlin's Superman getting his own CW show) one would be forgiven for assuming that we will never see Cavill's incarnation of Kal-El on screen again. Well, in the latest issue of Men's Health, Cavill himself says that isn't the case. "“The cape is in the closet. It’s still mine,” Cavill says in the interview. He's heard all the rumors about him leaving the role and he's ready to stand up to them:
“I’m not just going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”
That's a pretty firm stance by my estimation. Does it necessarily mean that we'll see Cavill play Supes again sometime? Perhaps with a sick 'stache, for good measure? I say "nay" to both propositions (although the latter "nay" I say with much sorrow.) As we've seen with Jared Leto and the Joker, one actor's wishes to play a part don't immediately translate into what gets made. At the end of the day, it's up to Warner Bros.
If you're a fan of Cavill's Supes, you might enjoy the news that at least one party is open to revisiting the role. I'm pretty impartial; I understand Cavill's appeal, but I also want to scour the new DC movies of everything that traces back to BVS:TM:TS*. Hopefully we can all reach a pleasant compromise that includes plenty of 'stache action.
