New TOP GUN: MAVERICK Trailer Takes You Right Into The Danger Zone

In which Maverick teaches a new generation of Mavericks.

The first Top Gun trailer arrived back in July, during SDCC, and it was about what we were expecting: slick cinematography, Tom Cruise being cocky, tons of very dangerous-looking aerial stunts, and - last, but certainly not least - as many visual callbacks to the 1986 original as was possible within a two-minute time frame. Today brings us a brand-new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick and it's, well, it's basically just more of all that.

Yes, much like the previous trailer, the new Top Gun: Maverick trailer plays allllll the hits: Maverick being sassy to his superiors in a military boardroom, Maverick flashing that shit-eating grin, Maverick doing sick jet stunts while his colleagues' eyes bulge out of their heads, Maverick on a romantic motorcycle ride with, er, well that's not Kelly McGillis at all, is it?

There's also a bit more plot to chew on in this trailer than the previous one, but it's the new official plot synopsis that really spells things out for us:

"After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it."

Will Top Gun: Maverick be any good? I don't know. Seems like they're leaning really hard on the nostalgia factor for this one, and nothing about this plot strikes me as terribly exciting and/or interesting. But the aerial footage does look great, and Cruise certainly seems happy to be donning a flight suit again. This might not be the best movie of summer 2020, but it looks like it'll at least be a decent way to kill a few hours in an air-conditioned movie theater. Sometimes that's all you need!

Anyway, we'll find out if this was worth the wait on June 26th. Y'all gonna show up for this one or wait for streaming? Sound off in the comments below.
