At Long Last, KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO Will Hit Gaming Consoles This Month

The wait is finally (almost) over.

Nearly a decade ago, a ragtag crew of indie game developers (Jake Elliott, Tamas Kemenczy, and Ben Babbitt) launched a Kickstarter for a new point-and-click adventure game by the name of Kentucky Route Zero. The Kickstarter was a success, and in 2013 the first installment - or "Act" - of their game arrived, upon which time it was almost universally praised as one of the more intriguing and well-built indie titles of the year.

More installments followed over the next three years, and eventually the team announced that they'd joined forces with Annapurna Interactive, who released the exquisite What Remains of Edith Finch, to finally get a console port of the game on the market. As a longtime fan of point-and-click adventure games (I grew up on alllll the classic LucasArts titles you can name), I watched this saga unfold with a special kind of interest: despite cutting my gamer teeth on a PC, I had long abandoned computer gaming for console gaming. So while I was very curious to play Kentucky Route Zero, I was determined to hold out for a console port before getting involved.

That announcement arrived back in 2017, and it wasn't until this morning that we got an update.

This is the official launch trailer for Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition, which arrived this morning alongside the announcement that the game would finally be hitting consoles on January 28th. In truth, I had kinda stopped wondering when this was gonna happen - in my darkest moments, I suspected it might never happen - so this trailer and the accompanying release date announcement have made my goddamn day. I'm finally gonna get to play this thing! After all these years! God, I hope it lives up to the hype.

Anyway, if you're in the same boat as I was, that's your good news for today. If anyone needs me, I'll be over here on the couch, quietly climbing the walls until January 28th.
