CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 Has Hired A Screenwriter

It might also have a release year.

In a development that will surprise no one, Marvel's Captain Marvel is officially getting a sequel. The studio has entered final negotiations with Megan McDonnell, WandaVision's story editor, to pen a follow-up to their 2019 Carol Danvers origin film. Brie Larson is returning in the starring role, of course, although Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are not said to be returning. The film is set to come out sometime in 2022, although no specific release date has been made public.

While she's new to the Captain Marvel sub-franchise, McDonnell isn't new to the MCU. Her involvement with Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision is very telling about the direction of that series as well as CM2. We've known for some time that WandaVision will feature Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. In the MCU, the character was last seen being portrayed as a child by Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel. In the comics, Monica is a superhero who uses the Captain Marvel mantle herself.

Aside from that very obvious link, there also seems to be an aura of significance surrounding WandaVision that will be felt by all the MCU productions of this next phase. WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer also wrote the story and first draft of Black Widow. Kevin Feige has teased a Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange crossover in the near future (and depending on who you ask, this may have factored into the "creative differences" that caused Scott Derrickson to walk from Multiverse of Madness).

Considering Wanda Maximoff's out-sized influence on the events of the Marvel Comics universe these past 20 years, it will be interesting to see if Marvel Studios is finally taking the character's reality-bending ethos to heart in order to really shake-up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hiring staff writers from WandaVision onto the movies is a smart way to keep everything organized--similar to how Captain America screenwriters Markus & McFeely worked on Agent Carter--but let's also hope that Captain Marvel 2 will work as its own movie and not as an episode in Disney's multimedia experiment.
