Taron Egerton May Headline The LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Remake
A few years back, word circulated that Warner Bros. was working on a brand-new version of Little Shop of Horrors, the horror/comedy hybrid that began its life as a 1960 sci-fi movie, got turned into an off-Broadway musical, and eventually became a 1986 cult classic starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin. Frank Oz directed it; it rules.
Anyway, it's been all quiet on the Little Shop of Horrors front ever since, but today brings us an update: according to the folks at Full Circle Cinema (who've had their scoop confirmed by Collider's Jeff Sneider, who can be counted on to verify such things), Rocketman's Taron Egerton has entered negotiations to star in the film, likely in the role of Seymour Krelborn, the dorky flower shop employee who encounters (and becomes an unwitting accomplice to) a man-eating Venus flytrap. Full Circle goes on to mention that Billy Porter is being eyed to voice said flytrap, while Scarlett Johannson is being considered to play the role of Audrey, Seymour's co-worker and love interest.
When we think of Taron Egerton, we tend to think of him as Eggsy, the dashing, put-together street kid-turned-spy he played in the Kingsman movies. Tousle his hair a bit, though, toss him in an unflattering sweater vest, and have him sing just as well as he did in Rocketman, and you'd really be onto something. Egerton would crush this role, and both Johannson and Porter are excellent choices for Audrey and Audrey II.
