The First Trailer For THE GREEN KNIGHT Is Metal As Hell

David Lowery's back, and does not appear to be effing around.

Listen, we love everything David Lowery does here at Birth.Movies.Death., but I'll fess up: upon hearing that Lowery's next project was an adaptation of the 14th century Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, I was not what you'd call "terribly excited". In truth, I feel like I've seen enough Arthurian legend movies to last a lifetime, and my fear was that this one might tone down some of the source material's weirder elements in an effort to ground things, and perhaps even aim for something within the realm of "family-friendly".

As it turns out, this fear was unfounded. David Lowery's The Green Knight looks big, weird and metal as hell.

This trailer knocked me on my ass. I love everything going on here: Dev Patel looks great as Sir Gawain, the titular Knight looks appropriately monstrous and huge, there are hints that this film won't be toning down the violence of the original tale, and every last frame of this goddamn thing looks absolutely beautiful. I went from being casually interested in this one to "Holy shit I need to see this immediately" in the ~90 seconds it took to watch this trailer. Love it when that happens! Also, sorry for doubting you, David Lowery.

Anyway, here's an official plot synopsis:

"An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.  From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table."

And here's the film's shockingly great first poster:
