Taika Waititi & Jude Law Are Joining Forces For A New Horror Comedy Series
Here's something worth getting excited about: according to Deadline, Taika Waititi (fresh off an Oscar win for is Jojo Rabbit screenplay) is developing a brand-new horror comedy series for Showtime called The Auteur. Based on the Oni Press comics series of the same name, the series is expected to star Jude Law as a desperate film producer who "accidentally traps his production on a backlot with a serial killer."
Says Amy Israel, Showtime's Executive VP of Scripted Programming:
“The Auteur unites the wildly imaginative filmmaker Taika Waititi and the barbed wit of Peter Warren with the undeniable Jude Law in a bloody love letter to the movies that will make you simultaneously die laughing and want to run for your life."
It probably goes without saying that Waititi's horror/comedy bonafides are well-established, both in What We Do In The Shadows and FX's spin-off series of the same name. This material's right in his wheelhouse, in other words, and it'll be interesting to see Jude Law (of all people) working with that kind of material. It'll also be interesting to see how faithful Waititi's version of The Auteur is to its source material. That book's pretty gnarly (go look up some pages on Google Images, you'll see what I mean).
Showtime has ordered multiple scripts from Waititi and co-writer Peter Warren, but the quote above makes it sound like they're rarin' to go. We'll keep you informed on The Auteur's progress as further updates roll in. In the meantime: any of y'all read these books? Into 'em? Not so much? Think they'll make good fodder for a series?
