Spike Jonze Made A Beastie Boys Doc And It Looks Excellent
Last year, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz - the surviving members of the Beastie Boys - went on tour with the Beastie Boys Book, offering a live show which essentially served as a history of the group's rise to stardom, its heyday, and its tragic end: the 2012 death of Adam Yauch. Along for the ride was filmmaker Spike Jonze, who'd worked with the Beastie Boys in the past and was filming various stops on the tour for the soon-to-be-released documentary, Beastie Boys Story.
That doc was supposed to have its big premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival. As you've surely heard by now, SXSW isn't happening anymore due to concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean Apple isn't moving full steam ahead on the release of Jonze's doc, which will open in IMAX theaters on April 2nd before premiering globally on the Apple TV+ service on April 24th.
Today brings our first trailer for Jonze's film, and you will not be surprised to learn that it looks great.
Here's an official synopsis:
"Beastie Boys Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz tell you an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in this live documentary experience directed by their longtime friend and collaborator, and loud chewer, filmmaker Spike Jonze.
The film is set to premiere on the heels of the 26th anniversary of the release of Beastie Boys’ No. 1 charting 1994 album, “Ill Communication,” and reunites Beastie Boys with director Spike Jonze over 25 years after directing the music video for the album’s immortal hit single, “Sabotage.”
Beastie Boys Story looks to offer a charming, upbeat experience - an incredible story well-told, and all that - and we're hyped to check it out (assuming, of course, that IMAX theaters are still open on April 2nd, and/or assuming that someone's willing to share their Apple TV+ password with us when Beastie Boys Story goes live on April 24th).
