XBOX’s SCORN Looks Like H.R. GIGER: THE VIDEO GAME

Don't watch this while eating lunch.

All the way back in 2016, the first trailer emerged for a game called SCORN, which was being developed for PC. That trailer promised a first-person horror shooter set within a nightmarish, bio-mechanical world that looked like an H.R. Giger painting brought to digital life, and we were very curious to learn more. Then SCORN basically dropped out of sight, a bunch of things happened, and we kinda forgot about it.

Flash-forward until today's XBOX Series X event, an hour-long parade of trailers and gameplay clips designed to show off what Microsoft's next-gen console's lineup will look like when it starts hitting stores later this year. Included among those clips was an all-new SCORN trailer, one whose graphics look noticeably more polished than the last time we saw the game in action (To be fair, the trailer informs us that SCORN is still "in development", and that the in-engine footage is representative of the title's "expected quality", but still).

Take a look.

The Giger comparison's not accidental: the game's developers have been very upfront about finding inspiration in the work of both Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, and from where we're standing they've absolutely nailed it. There's also a pleasing DEAD SPACE undercurrent to whatever's going on here (side note: can we get an HD remaster of that game?). We're into all of it, and are happy this one's still coming together.

Nothing further to report at this time, unfortunately. SCORN currently has no release date, but will definitely hit the XBOX Series X (and, eventually, PC) somewhere up the road. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground for further updates on it. Stay tuned.
