TRYING TIMES Podcast Episode 12: The David Farrier Interview

In which Scott and Shultz speak with someone who knows a thing or two about challenging experiences.

As per usual, the latest episode of Trying Times did not go according to plan.

This month's challenge had Shultz and I attending an Anime Convention, which certainly seemed like a thing that would result in a fair amount of shenanigans. We fully expected this one to be very similar to the Furry Dance Party episode, an excuse to rub elbows with a bunch of passionate, somewhat-kooky fans who might welcome us into their fold and teach us their ways. What we did not anticipate was how overwhelmingly boring (and unexpectedly contained!) said Anime Convention would be.

Good news is, our guest on this month's show is David Farrier, director of Tickled and star of Netflix's new gonzo travel-doc series, Dark Tourist. Here's a guy who knows a thing or two about going on adventures and placing himself in harm's way. We had about a million questions for him, so this episode finds us jettisoning our own challenge in favor of a sprawling, spirited conversation with David. It's a long, fascinating interview, and we think you're gonna enjoy it.

Have a listen (oh, and sorry about the low audio on my mic in those opening five minutes):

Next month, Shultz and I will be undertaking a challenge we're calling "Left For Dead", which will find us stranded in the Texas countryside for over 24 hours with nothing more than what we can fit in a backpack. We've got mini-challenges to attend to during that period ("Build a fire without a lighter" is one of them; "Don't get caught by state park authorities" will be another), and we look forward to sharing that experience with you just as soon as we've definitely survived it.

Oh, and if you haven't already watched Dark Tourist yet, get on that: the show is basically Trying Times if it had one host, a travel budget, and even bigger balls. We think you'll approve.
