Another Rumor That The Skrulls Will Be In THE AVENGERS
Two years ago I reported that the Skrull Empire would be the bad guys in The Avengers (you can read my initial reporting from Comic Con 2009 right here). There have, in the months since, been others trying to horn in on my eventual glory. The latest is a newspaper in Albuquerque, who have printed the following:
‘The Avengers” script will blend ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ story lines as the Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree.
But here’s the problem: the paper doesn’t attribute their source. Did they get info from someone at the Albuquerque Studios complex, where the film will shoot? From Marvel? Or maybe - and this is what I believe - did they do a web search and found out that the ‘Skrulls are the villain’ thing has been kicking around for two years?
I stand behind my initial reporting, but I’m also aware of two things: all of my information comes from a time before Joss Whedon joined the project and that web rumors tend to cast big shadows that people can mistake for reality.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Skrull are the villains in The Avengers. And I wouldn’t even be shocked if the Kree showed up, as they’re long-established as enemies of the Skrull and have been embroiled in a millenia-long war with them. I kind of like the idea of a return to the original Kree-Skrull War, where the Earth was a beachhead battled over by both sides, as opposed to the version in The Ultimates, where the ersatz Skrull were just looking to conquer Earth. The Avengers as third party in an intergalactic war is pretty awesome.
We should know soon enough. The movie is getting close to the starting line, and these secrets never stay secret for long. And if it is the Skrull, remember who told you first (and I’ll be sure to use the ‘Gloating’ tag in the post about the official announcement)!
