Go To The Movies: Weekend Movie Discussion (Summer Movie Rankings #6)
Somehow I didn’t get invited to a screening of Mr. Popper’s Penguins. I imagine I’ll survive without having caught the latest paycheck for Jim Carrey.
I did, however, see Green Lantern, and I was terribly disappointed. I really wanted to like this movie, and I had been a champion of it ever since going on the set and seeing what they had planned. The storyboards that I saw had such scope; so little of that made it into the movie. I think they had a good movie in concept, it’s simply that Martin Campbell couldn’t make that movie go from concept to reality. Simply not his wheelhouse.
Also opening this weekend is the very good documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times. I’d like to get my sorry ass to write up a review of that soon, but in the meantime know that it’s a compelling look at what makes a real newspaper operation worthwhile in this day and age. More than that, it’s a movie with a bona fide star - columnist David Carr should get his own film franchise.
By the way, I put Midnight in Paris, the new Woody Allen, into the Summer Movie Rankings. I loved it. There’s a half-written review on my desktop - maybe I can get it done today. I don’t mean to come across like I don’t care about writing these things (I very much care), but the summer season gets busy and it’s hard to juggle everything that needs to get done. Hope you guys understand.
Next week it’s Cars 2! Which I think I have to miss - there’s the LA Film Festival going on right now and then other press screenings. But I think I will be able to see Larry Crowne, and maybe I can help you figure out what the fuck this movie is even about.
And now… the rankings! Things got shook up this week. I bumped The Ward up a spot after Brian Collins’ whining convinced me that it was not worse than Pirates. Green Lantern is just a micrometer above Super 8 and Thor, and that’s mostly because the last twenty minutes are really fun.
