AVATAR 4 Will Be A Prequel
James Cameron has big plans for the Avatar sequels. He's supposed to be shooting 2 and 3 back to back, with the first sequel coming out in 2015. And when those are made he, unlike the rest of us, is not done with Pandora: he'll return to the planet for Avatar 4, a prequel.
Talking to MTV Cameron said:
[The events of the sequels] will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we’ll start, not imitating ‘Star Wars,’ but it’s a logical thing to do because we’ll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It’s a plan.
So the prequel will involve the first meetings between humans and Na'vi, and would offer an excuse to get Sigourney Weaver back into the picture.
I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world.
To be honest, that actually sounds more interesting to me than a further examination of the Na'vi's great white human hero. I cannot be the only person who has no curiosity about the future adventures of Jake Sully, right?
I say this every time I write about the vapormovies that are the Avatar sequels, but I'll say it again: I would like Cameron to forego any narrative feature set on Pandora and just make an IMAX nature doc about the planet. That would be actually interesting.
