Luc Besson’s THE FAMILY Gets A Tonally Confusing Trailer

Bearded De Niro alert.

This trailer for Luc Besson's new film, The Family, starts out with the familiar sounds of The Rolling Stones, Robert De Niro in full on slick mobster mode, and a Martin Scorsese executive producer credit, all of which tell us: This is going to be one badass, serious movie.

Then we cut to a disheveled, bearded Robert De Niro in France, and the whole thing becomes a kind of European riff on The Incredibles. Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Is it an action film? Unfortunately, it looks like it wants to be all three but doesn't quite get there. Maybe this is just a bad trailer, though. It does cut from goofy family hijinks to a mob of attacking 1930s-era wise guys all to the sounds of a cover of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good."

The pairing of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro feels like potential fun, and Michelle Pfeiffer is always worth watching. But this film has more work to do before I'm totally sold. What about you?
