Cameron Announces 3 AVATAR Sequels, Nation Says “Oh Yeah, I Forgot About That Movie”
Do you remember where you were when Avatar changed everything? When it hit the pop culture so hard that kids today are playing nothing but Na'vi on the playground, when it made Jake Sully an iconic character, when it launched a wave of people naming their children Neytiri? You can really look at the pop culture landscape as before Avatar and after Avatar.
The world has been breathelessly awaiting the further adventures of those cat people who sort of sexually abuse dragons, and now James Cameron, the mastermind behind transferring Yes album covers to the screen, has announced we aren't just getting a sequel. We aren't just getting a trilogy. We're getting a fucking Avatar quadrilogy. Four movies total, with the first once again changing the game in 2016. And the talent he's secured to write these films! He's got Josh Friedman, who wrote The Black Dahlia. He got Shane Salerno, who wrote Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. And he got the team of Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who wrote RIse of the Planet of the Apes, which was actually good. So one movie out of three has a chance!
Says Cameron:
“Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I’m pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh — all writers I’ve long admired – to join me in completing the films screenplays.”
The three films will shoot back to back, and they'll be released once a year, ensuring three years of absolute cinematic nirvana. The nation waits, quivering with anticipation to return to the world of Pandora, a world that has become as real and dear to us as our own.
