The MUMMY Reboot Might Get A New Mama

Director Andres Muschietti in talks to take over the film.

I'm all for a good Mummy movie. The original is great, and the Brendan Fraser films at least achieved the tone they were going for (the first two anyway; I never saw the Jet Li entry). While he's the least scary Universal monster in theory, a revamped Mummy movie could go a ton of different directions. With the right filmmaker in charge, the character has a lot of potential.

Luckily, the Mummy reboot's original director, Len Wiseman - a guy not likely to bring out the potential of peanut butter, jelly, and two slices of bread - found himself too busy with television's Sleepy Hollow to continue with the project. So now there might be a new director: Andres Muschietti, the guy who directed Mama.

I was really fond of Mama, both for its scary moments and its overall storytelling. A lot of people dislike the CG creature work, but I thought it looked fine. If nothing else, Mama speaks highly of Muschietti's ability to go dark, which this modern day update on the character is supposed to do. This is an Alex Kurtzman & Bob Orci production, however, so any excitment I might have remains properly tempered.
