NOAH Gets Noah 3D Love In The US
What's the word on 3D lately? Is it still a big draw or have expensive ticket prices for lazy post-conversions finally driven away normal movie-going folk?
Today brings an odd bit of 3D news. Darren Aronofsky's big biblical epic, Noah, which I'm starting to get really excited for, will roll out in the fancy format but not in America. 65 foreign countries will enjoy the sight of Russell Crowe's pointy package coming out at them while the rest of us here ("here" being the US, the UK, Australia, and France) have to look at a flattened man-package like a bunch of suckers.
Why is Paramount doing this? Because they believe those other countries will only go see the film if it looks like an action-packed blockbuster, and there's no better way for a movie to be an action-packed blockbuster than with 3D. They are confident that the rest of us will see the movie because we love Darren Arnofsky and/or God and don't need the deal sugared with a third dimension.
That's fine with me; I wasn't going to see it 3D anyway. I almost never do. But it is a curious and perhaps smart international box office decision. Maybe if a big action movie about Buddha comes out, we can get that one in 3D instead. Hopefully it stars Lam Suet.
