Spring Break Forever! SPRING BREAKERS Sequel Coming

But it's not from Harmony Korine.

Spring Breakers was one of the ten best movies released last year, so I'm excited for a return to its aesthetic. Wild Bunch is giving me that return, offering Spring Breakers: The Second Coming for sale at Cannes in the coming weeks. That's the good news. The bad news is that Harmony Korine isn't back, and Jonas Akerlund is directing. The other good news is that Irvine Welsh is writing the script, so maybe it'll be super interesting.

It'll be super weird, that's for sure. The logline guarantees it:

The Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.

But these will not be the Spring Breakers from the first film! “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” says Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval, who tells Screen Daily  "there will be a mix of new and old cast in the production."

Akrlund is the big question mark here. He was a successful video director (most of Roxette's stuff, Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up), but his movie output has been less promising (and I say that as someone who liked Spun back in 2002). He's also stepping into big stylistic shoes; I'm not sure I want a Spring Breakers 2 that feels completely aesthetically different from the first film. Still, Welsh - aka the Trainspotting guy - makes it very intriguing, as the script wasn't the most solid part of the laid-back Spring Breakers. Maybe this movie is going to feel completely different on every level.

I will wait with cautious optimism.
