The SCREAM TV Show To Feature A Kool And Dark Mask Redesign
You may have already forgotten that MTV is bringing the Scream series to our much-loved television format somehow. I guess it shouldn’t be too hard so long as you have Ghostface and lots of meta movie nonsense.
Whoops! It came out a while ago that Ghostface actually won’t be in the show (at least not at first). So now it’s just a program about people screaming on command. But never fear, according to EW, the show will have a new mask, one that will be more “organic,” indicating the Scream TV show will feature the first killer ever to wear flesh on his or her face. That’s accurate, right?
The weird news is that this new mask will still be a take on Edvard Munch’s iconic The Scream painting. Here’s MTV executive Mina Lefevre trying to explain what this means:
It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.
Dark! So dark! Not just darker than Scream but darker than Scream FRANKLY. That word means business.
Lefevre continues:
Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer. We’re tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.
So I don’t know. Accepting that this isn’t going to be like a Scream movie, maybe there is something to enjoy here. And there’s always a possibility that one of the gazillion real Ghostfaces will show up at some point. Look for the show to premiere next year.
