Amazon’s Getting Into The Theatrical Feature Film Game

Next step: global domination. I, for one, can't wait.

Amazon Studios - most recently responsible for the Golden Globe-winning series Transparent, starring Jeffrey Tambor - announced today that it will begin producing and acquiring feature films to be released theatrically, soon followed by distribution on Amazon Prime.

From VP Roy Price:

We look forward to expanding our production efforts into feature films. Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.

Indy filmmaker Ted Hope, co-founder of production company Good Machine, will be in charge of Amazon Studio's creative development. Good Machine produced Crouching Tiger,  Hidden Dragon, but don't confuse this with the news that Netflix - who also recently announced that they will be producing original feature films for theatrical release - will debut the Crouching Tiger sequel in August of this year.
