Diablo Cody’s Taking Over Writing Duties For BARBIE

Every announcement about Diablo Cody is cause to perk up. She has a strong, unique voice and we need more writers like her. So the fact that she's been hired by Sony to write the next draft of their live-action Barbie film has me interested in a movie that I never thought would interest me. 

From producer Walter Parkes: 

Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs. It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.

Here's a thing I love about Diablo Cody: she's never equated feminism with being anti-girly. As a girly feminist myself, that's important to me, and I think it will be important to making a movie about Barbie - the girliest girl ever - into something that could be worth a damn. Diablo Cody is living, walking, lipstick-rocking proof that you can love to dress up and wear makeup and still be a tough, smart feminist. It kind of sucks that this reality needs to be expressly stated, but that's how it is. If anyone can make Barbie a badass, it's Cody.
