The First Look at 21st Century Ash In ASH VS EVIL DEAD
If we don't count the horrible fan-pandering button at the end of the Evil Dead remake, we haven't seen anything new from Ash since 1992. People born the same year as Army of Darkness are old enough to drink. Think on that, you old fuckers. Think on that.
Well, he's back and he's blue-clad and bloody, just as we like him. The first image from Ash vs Evil Dead, the new Starz series that revives the Evil Dead franchise, is here. The show is shooting right now in New Zealand, a land Sam Raimi fell in love with for budget reasons back in the Hercules and Xena days.
Looks like Ash! And he's surrounded by new friends, his co-workers at the Value Stop (wherefore art though, S-Mart?). Yes, Ash is still a stockboy. And no, he has not been fighting evil for the last twenty years.
“He was perfectly happy doing basically nothing: telling lies about how he lost his hand in bars late at night," says Campbell. "That was basically his MO. So, he’s not really the guy who should be dealing with this right now. But…he is. He’s our guy!”
Campbell compares the show to... The Searchers. “I’m relegated a little bit into the John Wayne mode these days with my team—the young, virile, evil fighters who will pair up with Ash and take on this nemesis: this never ending, ever evolving nemesis.”
I am intrigued by this next iteration of the Evil Dead drama. I'm imagining that Starz will let this show be good and gory, but will Raimi and his team be able to recapture the energy of 20/30 years ago?
