DIRTY DANCING Meets WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: The Trailer For RED OAKS

I have a feeling neither of those comparisons is unintended.

Today Amazon's revealed the first trailer for their ten-episode half hour comedy Red Oaks, and it's going to bend over backwards to tickle your nostalgia bone:

Overall thoughts: it looks cute! Nothing extraordinarily special, but even if it's missing some of the specific magic that sets apart its clear predecessors Dirty Dancing and Wet Hot American Summer, relying instead on quirky wistfulness, that doesn't mean that Red Oaks is without their charm.

Here's the synopsis:

A coming-of-age comedy set in the "go-go" 80s about a college student enjoying a last hurrah before summer comes to an end--and the future begins.

Magic Mike XXL director Gregory Jacobs created the show, and that's some cred, as is the fact that Dirty Dancing's Jennifer Grey is playing the mom to lead Craig Roberts in a clever bit of in-joke casting that I don't mind at all. Richard Kind and Paul Reiser also star, and episode directors include David Gordon Green and Amy Heckerling, so Red Oaks definitely has some real players working for it.

All ten episodes debut on Amazon on Friday, October 9. What do you think of the trailer?
