Geena Davis Has Been Cast In THE EXORCIST TV Series

In my spare time, I curate a list of things you could add to any movie or TV show that would instantly guarantee my viewership. Alien invasion? I'm probably into it. Werner Herzog doing voiceover? Any time, anywhere. Roving gangs of mutants, cannibals, and/or mutant cannibals? You're goddamn right (and double points if any of the above are set against a post-apocalyptic setting).

This list also includes a number of actors and actresses, all of whom I would gladly watch doing...well, just about anything, really. Michael Shannon, Kate Winslet, Bill Murray, Jon Hamm, Elizabeth Banks, Jack Nicholson...look, there's a bunch of names on this list, is what I'm saying. And Geena Davis is definitely on this list. Geena Davis rules*.

All of which is to say: I'm excited to learn that Geena Davis has joined the cast of FOX's in-development TV series based on The Exorcist. Here's the news, via Variety:

A modernized TV take on William Blatty’s 1971 book and the film, Fox’s Exorcist is a serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession and confronting the face of true evil. 

Davis will play Angela Rance, who is described as regal and proud, but weighed down by stress. She does everything she can to stay positive and keep her faith even though her family is currently struggling. She can’t help but think if perhaps her nightmares about a demon are a sign of what’s wrong.

That seems like an unusual amount of character information, but I'm cool with it.

Look, there's no getting around the fact that William Friedkin's The Exorcist is an untouchable classic. We can rant and rave about remake/reboot/rebootquel culture all we want, but it's happening, and no amount of shrieking will change it.

And who knows? Maybe FOX's The Exorcist will turn out to be great (lest we forget: we all laughed when they said they were turning Hannibal into a TV series, and look how great that show was). I mean, if nothing else, it'll have Geena Davis.
