John Boyega Says He’s Reuniting With ATTACK THE BLOCK Director Joe Cornish
You've seen Joe Cornish's Attack The Block, right?
I mean, we've been singing the film's praises for five years now, so I'd like to think that frequent Birth.Movies.Death. readers are already hip to Cornish's 2011 debut, which remains not just one of the best genre movies of the past decade, but one of the best movies, full stop.
It's also the film that introduced most of us to John Boyega, the British actor who's been catapulted to superstardom thanks to his work in JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens. From the very beginning, it was clear Boyega had the goods, but it wasn't necessarily a given that he'd go on to find fame (there are, after all, only so many roles to go around for talented black actors).
This is why Attack The Block fans exploded when Boyega was announced as part of the Force Awakens cast: for better or for worse, people would know John Boyega's name, and if The Force Awakens turned out to be any good, well, we'd probably end up seeing a lot more of him. Much finger-crossing ensued.
Good news is, The Force Awakens turned out to be pretty good! And the better news is, Boyega - as expected - has been reaping his own rewards as a result. In addition to two more Star Wars films, dude's been hired to headline Pacific Rim 2, will star in Kathryn Bigelow's next film, and will voice Bigwig in Netflix's Watership Down adaptation. Boyega is everywhere and we're all better off because of it.
Oh. And if we're very, very lucky, he may be reteaming with Attack The Block's Joe Cornish.
Saw Joe Cornish the other day. Yes. We are brainstorming. #somethingnew

The news comes directly from Boyega's Twitter feed, and was the cause for much rejoicing over the weekend. Amidst all that celebration, I saw some people wondering if the two might be trying to get Attack The Block 2 off the ground, but that strikes me as unlikely. For one thing, it feels like the time for an Attack The Block sequel has passed (if it was ever necessary to begin with). For another, Boyega's tweet goes out of its way to say that he and Cornish are brainstorming "something new". That seems pretty definitive.
What might they be working on? There's no telling. Could be an adpatation Cornish has had his eye on; could be something entirely new. There's nothing specific to get excited about just yet, but just the fact that Cornish and Boyega are talking about a reunion is plenty enough for me.
We'll keep you updated as developments occur. In the meantime, please feel free fawn over Attack The Block in the comments below.
