This New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Concept Art Is Mind-Blowingly Weird
Ahead of a new article in the new issue of Empire Magazine, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has shared some concept art from the film.

Holy shit! What is that thing? It's floating in space and getting its ass kicked by our ol' pals Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Star Lord (Groot seems to be peacing out in the bottom left of the image), but beyond that I've got zero context to provide.
Well, almost zero context: I can tell you that this piece of artwork captures a moment which takes place during the opening sequence of the film. But what is this Lovecraftian creature from the beyond, and why are our heroes fighting it?
On that front, you're on your own, but I'm sure you guys will be happy to speculate away in the comments below. Please feel free to do so now.
UPDATE: According to a post on James Gunn's Facebook page, the creature the Guardians are fighting here is called an "Abilisk". Do with that what you will.
