Netflix Is Making A Ten-Part HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE Series

According to a new report over at Deadline, Netflix has just pulled the trigger on a 10-episode adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting Of Hill House. They've even got a director lined up: Mike Flanagan, who most recently worked with the streaming giant on an adaptation of Stephen King's Gerald's Game (Netflix must be feeling pretty comfortable with Flanagan's work, eh?).

The project is a modern re-imagining of Shirley Jackson’s classic 1959 novel, The Haunting of Hill House, considered one of the best ghost stories of the 20th century. It originated with Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, fans of the book, who tracked its rights to Paramount Television.

Whoa, whoa, whoa - "modern re-imagining"? Isn't that the same approach Jan de Bont took with 1999's hilariously ill-advised CGI cluster migraine, The Haunting? Speaking as a confirmed fan of both the source material and Robert Wise's 1963 adaptation, I suspect that keeping The Haunting of Hill House period-specific is at least half the battle when it comes to making this story frightening. Oh, well. What do I know!

Nothing further to report at this time, other than this small little piece of trivia: this 10-part Haunting Of Hill House series marks Amblin Entertainment's first scripted series for Netflix. Keep that in mind three decades from now when you're playing Trivial Pursuit: Just Before The Apocalypse edition.
