We Think The BLADE RUNNER 2049 Trailer Reveals A Huge Secret

Filmmakers must hate these trailer analysis posts. I would hate it if I were them. Someone at the studio drops in three frames of a shot because it's a moment that looks cool and serves their rythmic needs, and they give no fucks about whose spot is being blown up via the inclusion of those frames. And then we find those frames and point them out in posts like these. It's a dirty job, and it's not that someone's gotta do it, but someone's gonna do it. So let's get to it.

Last chance for spoilerphobes to clear out. 

So there's someone busting through a thick stone wall in pursuit of Deckard (Harrison Ford) and his dog. One would justly assume that's a replicant. 

If this is in fact a reverse angle of that shot and therefore a continuation of that sequence (it's a trailer, so assume nothing), that sure seems to indicate that Officer K (Ryan Gosling) is, er, more human than human. And if that's the case, that's a pretty big spoiler, huh? 

Take a look at that jacket. That sure looks like the jacket Officer K is wearing, no? 

Another spoiler: looks like Officer K is not only pursuing Deckard, but saving him from his own old Spinner, which goes boom. 

Pair this shot with Joi (Ana de Armas) saying "I always told you, you're special" to (again, we think) Officer K, and this trailer is either spoiling lots of Blade Runnner 2049's plot, or it's genetically engineered to be misleading. 

There's a million other things to pick apart in this trailer (that 6-10-21 date scratched in the stone - Rachael's grave?; a virtual reality forest; the return of Atari; Dave Bautista's creepy sex offender getup), but who has the time?

I will say the other big thing lingering in my brain from this trailer is Officer K saying to Deckard, "I want to ask you some questions." The way that moment hangs in the air makes me wonder if one (or both) of these fellas is about to take the Voight-Kampff test. Hm?

I was always in the bag for this movie, but I'm grateful that it appears to be trying to make its own mark. So far it's looking to be not the drowsy daydream of the original, but more of a legit action movie set in (and beyond) the world of Blade Runner. Whatever we end up with, that was the smart move.

Blade Runner 2049 opens on October 6th.
