Netflix Is Bringing Us A Series Based On THE WITCHER

This morning, Netflix announced that it's in the process of developing a new series based on The Witcher Saga, the wildly-popular eight-novel series from Andrzej Sapkowski which previously served as the inspiration for CD Projekt Red's game series.

According to IGN, Sapkowski will serve as a consultant on the series, and he sounds pretty pumped to be involved:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."

If you're not already familiar with the Witcher series, executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown describe it thusly in Netflix's press release: 

“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

So, it's a fantasy thing - dragons, bulky dudes wearing armor, magic, what-have-you - and it's built around a sprawling family of characters whose stories intertwine and play out over a vast and dangerous world. Not to be reductive, but this writer's suspicion is that Netflix may be eyeing this property as their own answer to Game Of Thrones. Not the worst strategy, especially with Game Of Thrones on its way out.

You folks feeling this? I picked up The Witcher 3 when it first came out and found it almost hilariously overcomplicated (note: this was before CD Projekt Red apparently overhauled the title's in-game menus, which caused my eyes to burst into flames and retreat back into my skull, screaming), but that has precious little to do with how the property might function as a series.
