Rumor Control: Nick Fury To Co-Star In CAPTAIN MARVEL
Wasn’t it rumored that Daniel Radcliffe would reprise his role as Harry Potter in Captain Marvel? It wasn’t, of course, but that’s the sort of response you’re likely to get when you bring up an upcoming blockbuster in any capacity. Internet rumors are everywhere (well, everywhere on the internet) and it’s hard to separate the fact from fiction when following a film’s pre-production – not to mention, you know, the whole “politics in general” thing – if you don’t know where to look, but luckily we here at BMD love us some journalistic integrity when we aren’t posting twelve straight reviews of The Evil Within.
This week’s superhero buzz that needs a squashing? Nick Fury co-starring in Captain Marvel… But wait! This one is not as unfounded as it seems!
The folks at Omega Underground recently tweeted about Samuel L. Jackson heading to Atlanta in January for the film’s production with no further information, and outlets decided to immediately run with the story. Nothing against Omega Underground of course, but it seems waiting on more details has made things a little clearer. They later clarified that what initially pointed them to the story were “rumblings within the production community,” which on the surface could be anything from rumors to legitimate cast lists, but in this case seems to be Jackson’s name being listed alongside Brie Larson’s for crew recruitment.
Does that necessarily mean Nick Fury will have a massive role to play? It’s hard to say just yet. He’s an attractive name, and who wouldn’t be tempted to work alongside him? For all we know he could appear in the same capacity as he did in Avengers: Age of Ultron (the last time he was seen in one of these), but regardless of how much screen time he has, it appears the plan for him to appear has been in place for some time.
Speaking to We Got This Covered back in February, Jackson revealed the following about his upcoming Marvel appearances:
“…they got Infinity Wars, two movies to do there, and after that there’s Brie [Larson’s] movie Captain Marvel, which maybe [Nick] will be part of.”
Sure, that interview from five months ago states it’s a “maybe,” but it at least makes it seem like these “rumblings” aren’t pulled out of thin air. If Fury’s going to play a role in the culmination of this version of the MCU, with appearances in both Avengers: Infinity War and its 2019 sequel, then it stands to reason he’d at least show up alongside fellow military veteran and Earth’s new Mightiest Hero Carol Danvers in the interim.
