DR. WHO: Welcome Jodie Whittaker, Our 13th Time Lord

This is excellent casting.

What a year, folks! First, we were given the spectacular Wonder Woman, (undoubtedly DC’s best) and now we have the reveal of our 13th incarnation of the Doctor, officially marking the first female Time Lord.

In the short teaser that played during Wimbledon (perhaps making this the most British day ever), we were given a glimpse of Broadchurch’s Jodie Whittaker making her fist approach to the T.A.R.D.I.S.

With Peter Capaldi and Moffat leaving the series after the upcoming Christmas special, speculation's run rampant as to who would become lucky number 13. If you were looking, there were plenty of hints hidden throughout this season, tons of moments were filled out with jokes aimed at mankind and the closemindedness of assuming gender and sexual preference. The implication, of course, was that the next Doctor might be female.

The goosebump inducing teaser (which you can watch at the bottom of this page), features someone dressed in a trench coat and hoodie trekking through a forest with the iconic sound of a nearby T.A.R.D.I.S engine. When the camera pans up and the Doctor removes her hood, Whittaker lights up the screen, T.A.R.D.I.S key in hand as she takes her first steps toward her blue box.

Not gonna lie, guys: I became entirely teary-eyed watching this one. Heck, I even got teary eyed typing “her” in that last paragraph. It’s brilliant casting - Whittaker was superb in Broadchurch - but mostly it feels like one of those rare moments in life in which you realize you are living through a historically significant moment.

Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will also make a leap over into the world Doctor Who as its new showrunner. With Whittaker and Chibnall coming in as new blood, expect a major much needed overhaul in the Whoverse next season.
