SUICIDE SQUAD 2 Gets A (Good) Director

It seems silly now, but once upon a time I was excited about Suicide Squad. It’s not because I love Insane Clown Posse or because I am super into the DC movie universe. It was simply because the thing was a David Ayer joint. And David Ayer is crazy. The idea of him making a superhero film made me giddy.

Of course, that did not pay off. So I come to this news of Suicide Squad 2’s new director with a bit of apprehension, despite the awesomeness of the offered name.

According to Deadline, Gavin O’Connor will take on Suicide Squad duties. Gavin O’Connor directed the incredible MMA movie Warrior. More importantly, he directed the beautifully wacky and entertaining Ben Affleck film, The Accountant. You should fucking see The Accountant.

Both these movies overcome some silly bits (Warriors creates a great drama from MMA, while The Accountant… well, you know), but O’Connor makes this silliness work. The name is a surprise if I’m being totally honest, but the more I think about it, the more I see how this guy could possibly spin some gold from all this Suicide Squad nonsense. If Warner Bros. stays out of his editing bay, that is.
