Weekend In Review: IT Yanks Another $60M Into The Sewer

Nothing can slow the roll of Dat Boi Pennywise.

We'll get to the latest on Andy Muschietti's IT in just a moment. For starters, let's instead discuss the absolute calamity of Darren Aronofsky's Mother!, which is struggling to hit $8M across 2,300+ locations this weekend.

Audiences rejected the film, slapping it with the dreaded "F" CinemaScore (note: other films to receive the same failing grade from audiences include Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and Steven Soderbergh's Solaris; do with that what you will) and staying away in droves. If you've seen Mother!, you're probably not surprised to learn this: Aronofsky made one of the most divisive films in recent memory, and - even if you liked the film - you've gotta admit that Mother!'s marketing campaign sold general audiences on...well, it definitely wasn't the movie they paid to see.

Reaction to Mother! is divided among the BMD staff, but I think I can speak even for the writers who didn't enjoy it when I say: you can't argue with Aronofsky's balls (nor, indeed, the balls of anyone else involved, up to and including the Paramount executive who greenlit this thing). Respect.

Andy Muschietti's IT, meanwhile, looks poised to rake in another $60M this weekend, bringing its total to somewhere around $218M after just 10 days in release. All signs point to IT hitting the fabled $300M-domestic mark before this is all said and done, and that's just...I mean...good lord. We all expected IT to be a hit, but very few people believed it could go that high.

On a related note: I'm curious - how many times have you folks seen IT? Are you going back for seconds and thirds? I'm currently weighing a fourth go-round with the movie, and don't think I'd be bored in the slightest.

That about wraps it up for this installment of Weekend In Review. What're you folks doing with your weekends? Hitting the movies? Soaking up the sun and having some drinks? Getting ready to travel next week? Sound off in the comments below, we wanna know what you're up to!
