Kevin Bacon & Aldis Hodge Join The Affleck/Damon Produced CITY ON A HILL

Showtime is buying up that GOOD WILL HUNTING goodwill two decades too late.

Kevin Bacon (Friday the 13th) and Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) have signed on to headline Showtime’s dramatic series City on a Hill, executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Michael Cuesta (Homeland) is directing the pilot, replacing Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), who left the project to helm Suicide Squad 2. 

Penned by Chuck MacLean (Boston Strangler), City on a Hill is based on an original story by Affleck and MacLean, and will be set in Boston (surprise, surprise) during the early ’90s, when the city was overrun with violent criminals emboldened by corrupt, racist local law enforcement agencies. Affleck and MacLean's take is a fictionalization of the “Boston Miracle.” District Attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge) forms an unlikely alliance with Jackie Rhodes (Bacon), a corrupt yet revered FBI veteran who's deeply invested in maintaining the status quo. Together, they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that eventually breaks down Boston's criminal justice system.

So, it's essentially an episodic revisit of The Town - Affleck's rather underrated crime thriller that he helmed after Gone Baby Gone. The talent behind this project is rather impressive, and seeing Showtime bring us a straight crime series is intriguing, as they've been on a roll with their original programming right now (with Twin Peaks: The Return being one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever produced). As of right now, the network's only ordered a pilot, but its hard to imagine (if City on a Hill is even half-decent) that it doesn't go to full series. We'll keep you up to date.
