Van Halen & Video Games: The New READY PLAYER ONE Trailer Is Here

Steven Spielberg is looking to shoot you into a pop culture dystopia.

The first Ready Player One trailer was distinctly "not for me", despite Steven Spielberg's name being slathered all over it. Ernie Cline's pop culture fantasy is a special sort of geek niche - tailor made for nostalgic thirty-somethings who view The Goonies as an untouchable cinematic classic and passionately love the mainstream iconography of the '80s. It's not that there's anything wrong with that, per se (love what you love, after all), it's just not this writer's personal corner of the filmic sandbox.

That said, this new full-length spot actually piqued my interest a bit, as it reveals a touch more of Ready Player One's basic plot, as well as Ben Mendelsohn as its boardroom bad guy.

Take a look:

While I am here for all your Duran Duran needle drops, Van Halen has also never been sequenced into my own personal soundtrack. Still, it's nice to see Spielberg in "pure entertainer" mode, especially since we're getting a serious dose of "dad rock Steven" this month with The Post (read our review here). It's amazing that the man can still flip those switches at will after all these years, and this is another example as to why he's one of our all-time best filmmakers.

Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.
