Luc Besson’s Gonna Make A Bunch Of Movies With Netflix
Exciting news via Variety:
"Netflix is in discussions with Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp to have the French filmmaker direct and produce several movies for the streaming giant over the next few years...
The movies would be labeled Netflix originals and would be budgeted in the $30 million range, sources with knowledge of the discussions said. Netflix and EuropaCorp declined to comment."
This is an interesting turn of events, though not a terribly surprising one. Netflix has money to burn, and they're willing to spend it on filmmakers who might not be landing immediate funding elsewhere. Besson's last few films have received a mixed response, financially-speaking (Lucy was an absolute barnburner, whereas Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, eh, not so much), so perhaps he's in the market for a package deal that won't involve much studio meddling.
Of course, that's just speculation. We don't really care either way. We're just happy to hear a bunch of new Besson material's on the way. Stay tuned for more on whatever these projects may turn out to be as further updates become available.
