Sleepless Steven Soderbergh To Direct NBA Drama Starring André Holland

The question "when does Steven Soderbergh sleep?" is a common one, until you consider that the man has mastered his digital workflow to the point that he reportedly shoots only eight-hour days (when the average production's going way over that), before cutting scenes he just captured on a laptop during his dinner break. Still, Soderbergh recently released the interactive mystery series Mosaic for HBO and has Unsane - the horror movie he filmed entirely on an iPhone - premiering at the Berlin Film Fest in a few weeks. That's a lot of eight-hour days! 

Now, Soderbergh has reteamed with his Knick star André Holland, and the playwright/co-screenwriter of Moonlight (Tarell Alvin McCraney) for the NBA drama High Flying Bird. The movie's logline reads as such:

“During an NBA lockout, a sports agent, Dean (Holland), presents his rookie client, Erick Scott, with an intriguing and controversial business opportunity.”

Not a whole lot to go off of there, but the talent involved is just incredible. To top it all off, High Flying Bird begins shooting this month after Soderbergh presents Unsane at Berlin. I'm convinced the director's not really a man, but some cinema robot sent from the future to entertain us all. 

This will be McCraney's first project since sharing the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with Barry Jenkins for Moonlight, and seeing one of our greatest working (not to mention experimental) directors bring his words to life is going to be amazing. Given Soderbergh's new penchant for pocket tech, we'll have to see if he shoots High Flying Bird on his phone as well.
