THE OUTSIDER Trailer: In Which Jared Leto Joins The Yakuza

He's also kinda doing his BLADE RUNNER 2049 voice for some reason.

Another day, another trailer for a Netflix release we had no idea was in the works. Today it's The Outsider, and - as it turns out - this one didn't actually start life as a Netflix original: the streaming giant picked up the distribution rights to this one all the way back in 2016, and now we're finally getting a look at it.

Here's how their press release describes the film:

"Set in post-WWII Japan, an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) is released with the help of his Yakuza cellmate. Now free, he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while navigating the dangerous criminal underworld."

That's right: The Outsider is the Jared Leto-joins-the-Yakuza movie you've been waiting for.

OK, here's the thing: I know Leto's an easy target and we've all had a lot of fun giving him the business, but this movie doesn't look terrible. A little uninspired, maybe (call me crazy, but I feel like we've seen 15,000 variations on this story before), but it appears to be well-shot, well-staged, has a solid cast, and also features Leto beating some smart-mouthed middle manager with an old telephone. I wouldn't say I'm sold, exactly, but I'm certainly not opposed.

The Outsider hits Netflix on March 9th. You folks gonna give it a whirl, or are you still limiting your Leto acceptance to Blade Runner 2049 rewatches (if this is the case I totally understand and you should take all the time you need.)?
