HEATHERS Reboot Suddenly Delayed For Fear Of Poor Taste

As if it wouldn’t ever be in poor taste?

Well, it looks like the folks over at the Paramount Network are suddenly getting a little jumpy about that much touted - and derided - television reboot of Heathers. A new press release reads as follows:

Paramount Network’s original series “Heathers” is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence. While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.

Setting aside the notion that the show and the press release don’t seem to have a firm grasp on concepts like “satire,” “comedy,” “creativity,” or “challenging,” this is obviously a good thing. The Heathers pilot’s online premiere foreshadowed a series that demonizes and misrepresents an entire generation, and now it seems we have confirmation that it was going to continue to do so with school gun violence as its tone-deaf vehicle for delivery. And with how gun violence in American schools doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, it seems entirely possible that delay could be a lot longer than anticipated.

Good riddance.
