Adam McKay Has A Great Idea For ANCHORMAN 3, A Movie That’s Probably Not Happening

Well, it's a fun thing to think about, at least.

Roughly four years ago, Adam McKay finally gave Anchorman fans what they wanted: a full-blown sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which brought back all the familiar faces from the original Anchorman while dialing up the insanity. We looked upon it and saw that it was ... well, just okay.

The lukewarm response to that long-demanded sequel is probably why we haven't heard anything about a third Anchorman in the time since (pssst: I revisited Anchorman 2 not long ago and it's better than I remembered), but that doesn't mean the idea's never been floated. In fact, as it turns out, McKay's got a pretty solid idea for an Anchorman 3, should such a thing ever come to pass.

In a new interview with CinemaBlend, McKay shares the following:

"I can give you like a little half sentence. I don’t know if you remember the first and even the second Iraq war. Maybe it was mainly the second Iraq war. They embedded journalists and that gave us kind of a whole story idea … I don’t want to say too much, but I’ll just tell you that embedded journalist, Ron Burgundy, Veronica Corningstone, the news team. That definitely gave us a big idea."

Look, do we need an Anchorman 3? No, probably not. Are people clamoring for an Anchorman 3? Not to my knowledge, no. But would we watch an Anchorman 3 that revolves around shipping Ron, Veronica, Brick, Champ and the musky Brian Fantana off to a warzone? Oh, absolutely. That's a strong concept, and one we can imagine the increasingly-political McKay doing something very interesting with. It'll almost certainly never happen, but come on: that's a strong concept, right?
