Seth Rogen And Evan Goldberg’s THE BOYS Casts Its Hughie
As you know, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are currently putting together an adaptation of Garth Ennis' comic series, The Boys, for Amazon. Assuming the adaptation's faithful, the show will be a gnarly, decidedly R-rated affair, and assuming it's as good as Rogen and Goldberg's Preacher series (working towards its third season on AMC), it'll also be an absolute spectacle.
We've heard little about the series for a few months, but today brings the news that Rogen and Goldberg have cast Jack Quaid in the key role of Hughie, the reluctant and perpetually-disgusted lead character in Ennis' series. Quaid's a dude you might recognize from The Hunger Games, and he definitely does not look much like the comic's version of Hughie, who was modeled on Simon Pegg.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Boys, Deadline's got this description:
"...based on the comic book by Garth Ennis (Preacher) & Darick Robertson and directed by Goldberg & Rogen, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame. It revolves around a group of vigilantes known informally as “the boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty."
We remain faithful in Rogen and Goldberg as a creative force, but here's the part where I'll own up to not being very excited about The Boys becoming a TV series. After reading (and loving) Preacher, I went through a phase where I was snapping up other titles that might be similar (read: non-superhero, adult-oriented), and overall I'd say those blind buys resulted in greatness (Locke & Key) as often as they resulted in me rolling my eyes at a book trying way too hard to be shocking (Crossed). Initially, The Boys landed somewhere in between for me, but eventually the whole thing just felt one-note and gross.
Oh, well - if anyone can find the right balance on this material, it's probably Rogen and Goldberg. They've pulled it off before, and we have every reason to think they'll pull it off again. Fingers crossed.
