F. Gary Gray Will Direct The M.A.S.K. Movie For Paramount

Here comes the Hasbro shared universe.

We've been hearing rumblings about a "Hasbro Cinematic Universe" for some time. As the name implies, this would be a series of loosely (?) interconnected films based around Hasbro toys - stuff like Transformers, M.A.S.K.G.I. Joe, and whatever the fuck ROM: Spaceknight is.

Well, today we're one step closer to the HCU becoming a reality. Per Deadline:

"Paramount has made a deal with F. Gary Gray to team with Hasbro to develop to direct MASK. The live action film will be built based on the ’80s Kenner action figures and the animated series.

MASK is an acronym for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, a task force led by Matt Trakker whose goal is to take out the criminal organization VENOM. The film will be produced by Hasbro, and Gray.

Is that what M.A.S.K. was about? Well, alright.

As Deadline points out in their own report, Gray is coming off two giant blockbusters - The Fate of The Furious and Straight Outta Compton - two films that more than prove Gray's bonafides where it comes to juggling a team-based cast and spectacular set pieces. While we remain unconvinced that a M.A.S.K. movie needs to exist in the first place (side note: that's the last time I'm writing out that title with all those periods; sorry, Paramount), we gotta admit that Gray's actually a great choice for the project.

Gray's gonna be busy on the Men In Black reboot for a while (it arrives May of next year), so it's probably okay that MASK doesn't yet have a writer attached. We'll keep you informed as further updates roll in.
