Taron Egerton Will Play Elton John In ROCKETMAN
Let's face it: last year's Kingsman: The Golden Circle was mostly unfortunate, an overstuffed-yet-undercooked facsimile of the first Kingsman that never came anywhere near hitting that film's delirious highs.
We found it disappointing, but hey - maybe we can credit it for leading to this:
"Paramount Pictures is closing a deal to finance and distribute worldwide Rocketman, a picture package that has Dexter Fletcher directing Taron Egerton in the role of Elton John, through the course of a most iconic life. The film covers the singer/pianist’s growth from a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to a global superstar, through his influential and enduring musical partnership with his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin. It is an unvarnished rock ‘n’ roll biopic with John’s life stripped back of the glitter."
That's Deadline breaking the news that Kingsman: The Golden Circle's Taron Egerton will now be playing Kingsman: The Golden Circle's Elton John in a biopic based on the iconic singer's life. Perhaps Egerton performed his Elton John impression while on-set with the musician, which sounds most impressive:
"Egerton...will sing the songs himself, and sources said that everyone who has heard him has been gobsmacked by the quality of his voice and its proximity to the subject as Egerton sang numerous of his classics."
Further evidence that we have Kingsman: The Golden Circle to thank for this (and we are thankful, because this is an intriguing bit of casting): Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn is producing the film via his Marv Films, alongside John's own Rocket Pictures. Get Julianne Moore and Channing Tatum in here somewhere and it'll be a full-blown reunion.
Anyway, if you know anything about Elton John, you know the guy's had a helluva life, one that's long overdue for the big-budget biopic treatment. That John's personally involved and has Egerton filling his electric boots is something worth celebrating, and we're very curious to see how this turns out.
