Report: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Had The Biggest Opening Weekend of All Time

Add "THE FORCE AWAKENS' opening weekend box office tally" to the list of things Thanos has obliterated.

We all knew Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War was gonna have a massive opening weekend at the box office. The only question was, "How massive?"

Most box office prognosticators seemed to agree it'd have no problem clearing the $191M mark established by Avengers: Age of Ultron, but would it have the juice to topple Black Panther's $202M opening? That seemed likely, sure, but how much higher could it go? For instance, was there any chance in hell it could top the $247.9M raked in by Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

Disney figured it'd land somewhere in the $220-240M mark, just behind JJ Abrams' 2015 film, but Disney also has a habit of being very conservative when it comes to box office estimates; giving a film that wiggle room comes in handy if something happens to underperform. And so, the industry (and the sort of fans who enjoy monitoring box office reports the way some sports fans like keeping tabs on player stats) held its collective breath, waiting for that final tally.

And now we know: according to Deadline, the Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War pulled in an estimated $248-250M this weekend, a figure that'd represent the biggest opening ever at the domestic box office. That's an astounding amount of money, testament to both the enduring popularity of the MCU franchise and the loyalty of its fanbase.

It's important to note that this figure isn't final - it could very well shift by a few million dollars in either direction before the dust settles - but we'll have an official ruling on that soon enough. For now, we raise our Infinity Gauntlet-shaped beer steins to the Russo Brothers, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Kevin Feige and anyone else who helped pull off this incredible achievement: looks like you conquered the galaxy with this one, folks. Maybe kick off your shoes and take the next few weeks off? Live a little.

Did you see Infinity War this weekend? How many times? Does it hold up to repeat viewings? Not so much? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for more on Infinity War's opening weekend box office tally as it becomes available (we'll update this post once it's 100% official).
