Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Will Next Score A24’s Dramatic Musical, WAVES

Trey Edward Shults' IT COMES AT NIGHT follow-up is gonna sound amazing.

Trey Edward Shults' It Comes at Night wasn't a runaway box office blockbuster, but it earned quite a bit of critical acclaim, and further cemented Shults as a director worth paying attention to. We've been wondering what his follow-up might be for some time - after Krisha and It Comes at Night, there was no telling what kinda movie it might be - and yesterday, we got our answer.

Waves, Shults' next film, is a "dramatic musical" revolving around "two young couples as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love". So far, the production has added the great Sterling K. Brown and Lucas Hedges to its cast, and both of those choices are definitely worth getting excited about...

...but here's the part we're particularly hyped over:

"The film will be almost entirely synchronized to music, mixing some iconic contemporary songs alongside an original score by Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross."

That's right - Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who previously won Oscars for their work on David Fincher's The Social Network) will score Waves, which is one helluva coup for Shults. It would, in fact, be a coup for any filmmaker looking to make a musical that's "almost entirely synchronized to music". One can't help but assume that Reznor and Ross' fastidious attention to detail will be a bonus in that regard.

Production on Waves will begin in Florida next month, which means we've probably got more casting announcements headed our way in the near future. Stay tuned for further updates as they roll in, and feel free to spend the interim celebrating the announcement of another Reznor/Ross score along with us in the comments below.
