The Rock Continues To Threaten Us With A BLACK ADAM Movie
Try as this writer may, he just can't quit Dwayne Johnson.
Despite getting pummelled by San Andreas and totally flabbergasted by Central Intelligence, I still want to believe he can be a great movie star. Perhaps it's the fading memories of his Rundown greatness (not to mention Pain & Gain being a legit MAS-TER-PIECE), or the fact that his baby-oiled mass of ownage continues to be the best part of the later Fast & Furious movies (no disrespect to the One and Only God, Jason Statham), but I'll never let go of my burning desire to see Johnson become this generation's Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yes, that means I will see Skyscraper on opening day, with the hopes that it's his dumbass, high-tech Die Hard.
One thing I don't want to see? The Rock in a DC Movie. It's not even that I HATE the DCEU (if that's even really a thing anymore), as I was the guy at BMD who kinda, sorta enjoyed Justice League. No, my disinterest comes from the fact that they can't seem to get their shit together, and if that prevents Johnson from discovering his very own Commando, it's going to piss me off to no end.
Anyway, the whole point of this rambling preamble is that The Rock's out in these streets running his mouth about a Black Adam movie again. Speaking with German site FilmStarts, Johnson continues to threaten us with this unwanted big screen adaptation:
“With Black Adam I don’t think we’re going to start early next year. Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it.”
The screenplay Johnson's referring to is being penned by Rampage scribe Adam Sztykiel, but there's still no director attached to the project as of yet, which is kind of troubling (seeing how you usually need one to help shepherd these blockbusters along...or maybe you don't, whatever). But Johnson even dropped some vague hints as to the surprises we may see in this hypothetical motion picture:
“Without giving anything away, there MIGHT be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes. We’ll see. That’s been the beauty of Black Adam as we’ve been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that’s also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.”
The obvious cameo The Rock is referring to is Zachary Levi's Shazam!, as Black Adam was reportedly originally supposed to be the villain in eventual director David Sandberg's picture before being spun off into his own project (with Johnson hopping on as star and EP for roughly a decade now). He could also be referring to James Wan and Jason Momoa's iteration of Aquaman, as he's ostensibly the only hero in the DCEU still standing strong at the moment (while the company re-tools their entire universe from the ground up).
On one hand, it's neat to see The Rock continuing to be passionate about this character, as you wonder if it could yield a Deadpool situation (where an actor just knew in their hearts they were right for a role and it eventually panned out into their biggest hit). On the other, who gives a shit? I'd much rather see Johnson trying to elevate the action genre than working with a company who doesn't seem to know its ass from a hole in the ground (and would probably stand in the way of Black Adam actually being a good movie).
To be continued...but we sort of hope other things keep getting in the way...
