Attention, Citizens: Neill Blomkamp Will Direct ROBOCOP RETURNS
According to Deadline, MGM just signed Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) to helm a brand-new installment in the studio's seemingly-unkillable RoboCop franchise. They're calling it (checks notes) RoboCop Returns.
Says Deadline:
"The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes...will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original."
Now that's an interesting wrinkle: Blomkamp's RoboCop Returns will be a rewritten take on a sequel script Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago, in the wake of the original RoboCop. That would lead one to believe that the duo's concept contains ideas intriguing enough to circle back around to three decades later, but - oddly enough - the plot description provided by Deadline sounds like most RoboCop movies: "Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption."
Neill Blomkamp, as you know, has spent the past few years tinkering around with his online Oats Studios project (more on that here), following the implosion of a long-gestating quasi-sequel to James Cameron's Aliens. Given all the sci-fi, social commentary and heavy machinery of the RoboCop franchise, I suppose it's easy to see what drew him to this project.
What do you folks think? Into another RoboCop? Into Neill Blomkamp directing another RoboCop? Are you all good on RoboCops following the paint-by-numbers 2014 remake we've all agreed not to talk about? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for more on this one as it becomes available.
