The First Full Trailer For MANIAC Just Melted Our Brains

Cary Fukunaga's Netflix limited series looks absolutely incredible.

We've been chomping at the bit to learn more about Cary Fukunaga's Maniac ever since the project was announced. A ten-part limited series starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, Maniac is Fukunaga's first directorial effort since 2015's outstanding Beasts of No Nation, and was rumored to be very trippy, indeed.

It appears the rumors weren't lyin': this thing looks bananas.

This writer's into everything going on here - the cast (which, in addition to Stone and Hill, also includes Sally Field and Justin Theroux), the imagery (which seems to be drawing inspiration from all kinds of sources, from Stanley Kubrick to Ridley Scott's Alien to the Lord of The Rings franchise, of all things), the setup (two troubled individuals entering into some kind of sinister clinical trial that "solves" their minds). Compelling work across the board.

This footage feels more playful and willfully hallucinogenic than I'd expected (in addition to the aforementioned titles, I'm also getting strong The Congress vibes here), but I love that even those moments are shot through with the same ominous feeling that's pervaded so much of Fukunaga's other work. Will be there on day one for this madness.

What do you folks think? Feeling this as much as I am? Planning to tune in when Maniac launches worldwide on September 21st? Sound off in the comments below.
